About Us Since 2017, EAN has provided to newcomers its English learning programme. Our mission is to increase your prospects in the Dutch higher education system and the job market. History Win ter 2016 Noticing a curious a bsence When Phillip Wozny, the founder of EAN, volunteered with Welkom in Utrecht at the Joseph Haydnlaan Asylum Seekers Center, he noticed a curious absence of English language education and started reaching out to for help to meet the large demand. Win ter 2017 A small initiative opened its doors Through the InclUUsion program, led by Elena Valbusa, Utrecht University provided much of the initial infrastructure to get EAN off the ground. A dedicated group of volunteers quickly gathered around and EAN opened its doors as a small initiative in February 2017. Fall 2018 The EAN foundation was born Soon after Kinan Alajak joined as a volunteer teacher, he assumed the lead role and reshaped the administrative structure, significantly growing the organization. In September 2018, EAN was officially incorporated as a foundation by Phillip and Kinan. ​ ​ January 2021 EAN arrives at the north of the Netherlands Thanks to the expertise from EAN Utrecht, the financial support of the University of Groningen and fruitful collaboration with COA North, Seyit Gök and Marije Michel opened in January 2021 EAN Groningen. Our students About 180 course seats are offered annually to highly educated newcomers who arrived in the Netherlands through the asylum route and who are now seeking to improve their English proficiency for academic or professional purposes. ​ Over the years, we've had the privilege of teaching incredibly diverse groups of students, who were judges, lawyers, doctors, engineers, university teachers, artists, in their home countries, among various other disciplinary backgrounds. Many of our students credit EAN with refining their language skills, creating a social network, and introducing them to the city and its university. ​ Are you interested in becoming a student at EAN? Without their selfless contributions, we couldn’t open our doors to the countless newcomers who apply to learn English at EAN every year. ​ The team consists of a small group of international professionals who enjoy teaching and feel a social responsibility to give back to newcomers in the Netherlands. Most of them have pursued higher education in foreign languages and have firsthand experience with migration. Joining our team means you will have the opportunity to grow in a highly diverse and inclusive environment (both within the team and in the classroom) and improve your didactic and class management skills. Organization The English Academy for Newcomers (EAN) is a registered foundation at the Chamber of Commerce in the Netherlands and designated as a public benefit organization (ANBI) by the Dutch Tax and Customs Administration. The governance of EAN falls under the responsibility of its Board of Directors . The board members and our personnel offer their professional services voluntarily, without remuneration. Advanced English (Level C1) IELTS Bands 6.5–7.5 About the Course Are you planning on taking IELTS for your university entry requirement or for a job? This course aims to prepare participants for the IELTS, which is an international standardised test of English language proficiency for non-native English language speakers. This course is designed to develop the specific language skills of students preparing to take the IELTS Examination. The course targets the listening, reading, writing and speaking competencies that are required to successfully complete the four bands involved in the IELTS exam. It also pays attention to improving a student's examination skills within the IELTS constraints. In this course, you will work towards C1 and prepare for your IETLS test. Learning goals This course will take you towards the C1 level, and by the end of this course, you will: To adapt general English competencies to the specific requirements of the IELTS examination. To develop the necessary language skills to ensure success in the IELTS examination. To develop analytical skills by investigating a range of texts. To practice IELTS exam-taking skills. Method We focus on four different IELTS test modules; listening, reading, writing and speaking. The students’ development is provided through taking sample tests and receiving personalised feedback, alongside a wide range of meaningful activities, tasks and assignments, such as extensive listening and reading, allowing them to understand the English language comprehensively from authentic and meaningful contexts. Your instructor(s) At EAN, we offer our courses for a very low fee thanks to our volunteer teachers who have diverse backgrounds and differing amounts of teaching experience. Because those teachers are volunteers, they usually have other commitments or responsibilities such as focusing on their own studies or paid work. < Back EAN Groningen Receives Impact Award of the University of Groningen Kinan Alajak, photo by Niels Brouwers 22 sep. 2022 Marije Michel and Seyit Gök, initiators of EAN in the North, won the Impact Award for staff and the Public Prize for bringing EAN to Groningen, Noord-Nederland. Marije and Seyit transported the EAN concept to Groningen in January 2022, with the aim of helping newcomers with a refugee background with their academic integration through language education. Six groups of highly educated newcomers from Groningen, Friesland and Drenthe have now started English lessons, which are provided by volunteer teachers. Jury chairman Riemke Scharff, head of communications at the Hunebedcentrum at University of Groningen, praised this initiative for the direct impact it has on people's lives. The jury was also impressed by the publication Michel and Gok wrote, which contains concrete tools that can be used by others. The project also received the most votes from the public, and therefore also won the Public prize. < Back Hogeschool Utrecht & EAN Announce Community Partnership Phillip Wozny 3 jul. 2019 English Academy for Newcomers (EAN) and Hogeschool Utrecht (Teacher Education) announce partnership that will support the EAN English language education through teaching internships The partnership agenda provides select students with the opportunity to gain professional experience in teaching English for their HU Teacher Education Program. At EAN, the end goal is for its newcomer-students to take and pass the IELTS test, so that they can enrol in a university. Through this internship, participants will be a part of the teaching team helping to make this happen. Teaching interns will be working together with EAN’s experienced educators who will provide them with supervision and support. They will also receive training in Task-Based Learning (TBL) methods. TBL embeds language education in a context unique to the students’ particular needs. “We are very excited to see the interaction between the HU students and ours. This partnership will not only be another source of knowledge to drive innovation in our programs but also a chance to raise the awareness of young local communities on the importance of education to newcomers in rebuilding their lives in the Netherlands.” said Kinan Alajak, executive director EAN. “We are looking forward to collaborating with the English Academy for Newcomers. This will certainly be a win-win situation as our students will gain valuable hands-on experience teaching English to second or third language learners and the participants will benefit from newly acquired knowledge on how to improve their language skills. Apart from these practical considerations the HU also has a social responsibility towards refugees, recognising their capabilities and playing an active part in helping them regain their lives and careers.” said Jenny du Plessis, HU international coordinator. Students aren’t the only ones expected to develop. Interns grow in their professional capacity by responding to feedback. In this course, you will work towards the B1 level and prepare for our B2 level course. Learning goals This course will take you towards the B1 level, and by the end of this course, you will: Feel more confident using English in daily life. This course will enable you to formulate more developed speaking and writing ideas and enhance your listening and reading comprehension. In January 2022, EAN opened its new doors in the North. Two groups of highly educated newcomers from Groningen, Friesland and Drenthe started English classes provided by dedicated volunteer teachers under guidance of Dr Seyit Gök (Academic Director) and Prof. Dr. Marije Michel (Academic Director).
